Chapter 19+Documents
The theme of this chapter is empires in collision specifically between europe, the middle east and east Asia. The timeline begins at the moment when the Chinese reject the british request for open trade and end with the Chinese revolution at the end of the Qing dynasty. We learn about the major pressure in the west, failure if conservative modernization,the ottoman empire and west during the nineteenth century. As well as europe and reform vs the opponents of reform, the similarities between the chinese and ottoman empires. We see japan as a rising power in the newer east asia, american intrusion and the meiji restoration. Next we hear about the modernization of the japanese style, as well as success and failures. In the documents we learn about the major changes in china as well as a new monarchy. We also learn about chinas examination system and their edict on education. Next the documents show us about gender, reform, revolution in accordance to the revolutions in china. The visual source gives us incite to the japanese perceptions of the west and teaches us that there are many perspectives in which one can view the world.
I feel every century has a society, or and empire rises up and finds a way to fall. I usually would say it was greed involved somehow, but I can't recall on how the ottoman empire fell during this time.
